The objective of the CORNET project „HaPTec" is the further qualification of machine hammer peening (MHP) technologies for industrial use. After definition of a catalogue of criteria for the use of MHP processes, a benchmark is carried out to allow for comparing MHP with conventional and industrially established processes (shot peening, deep rolling and diamond finishing).

By this means, potentials as well as unique selling positions of MHP treatments can be concretized and tool manufacturers can be provided precise criteria for the adaption of existing tools and further tool development. Furthermore, an experimental benchmark is performed to check how relevant surface characteristics can be affected by each treatment. Predictability of surface layer states obtained by MHP is developed using finite element (FE) simulation as well as similarity mechanics based on Buckingham's π-theorem.

Chances and limitations of such tools are investigated. Measures have been taken to enable MHP treatment of hardly reachable regions, such as bore holes and undercuts. Therefore, a new tool for such treatments is developed and optimized. Furthermore, the boundary conditions for the integration of MHP into robot systems are investigated and solutions presented.

Based on results of MHP treatments of different materials reaching from hardness of 120 to 960 HV (Zamak, Al2024, AISI4140 / 42CrMo4, WC-Co), a material catalogue of "hammerable" materials is created. Eventually, guidelines for the industrial application of MHP are established, giving potential users an efficient choice of process parameters and machining strategies.
